On Oct 16, 1940, Walter married the love of his life, Louise Finley, on Union Street in Monticello. Reverend Barnes performed the ceremony. They had two daughters, Sherry & Sandy.
He then answered his country's call and on February 21, 1945, he joined the US Navy. He trained at San Diego, California, and was sent to Laundry School at Shelton, VA, where he became a presser.
In October of 1945, Seaman 1st Class Cox was assigned to duty aboard a troop transport and made three trips to LeHavre, France, and one trip to Manila, in the Philippines. After serving overseas for a total of seven months, he was honorably discharged in Memphis, TN on March 5, 1946.
