Seth M. Blackmer was born in Acushnet on June 17, 1819 on the Mason Taber place, northeast corner Long Plain and Perry Hill Roads. He was the son of Salisbury and grandson of Captain Salsbury and Lucy (Mendell) Blackmer.
His father died when Seth was less than three years of age, and he lived with his uncle Seth Mendell at Mattapoisett, attending the district school in the winter months. When but fourteen he began a seafaring life, shipping as cabin boy on the whale ship "Pacific" Subsequent voyages were on "Pacific" in 1838, "Montpelier" in 1840, "Erie" in 1851, "Roman" in 1853, "Stella" in 1862, "Artic" in 1868.
He was captain when but twenty one and part owner of the "Juliana" in 1840. He rounded Cape Horn thirteen times and sailed around the world eight times. Captain Blackmer married first in June 1851, Catherine A. Mendall of Acushnet. He married second on June 25, 1857, Catherine's sister, Hannah. They are the daughters of George Mendall of Acushnet.
