Edward was from Lavaca County, Texas and enlisted on September 27, 1861 at Victoria, Texas. He was captured at Arkansas Post on January 11, 1863 and sent to Camp Chase, Ohio Prison Camp. He was exchanged at City Point, Virginia in April, 1863. (On the way to City Point for exchanged their train was met in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania "City of Brotherly Love" by an angry mob who threw rocks and bricks at them). He was promoted to 2nd Lt. on March 9, 1863 and 1st Lt. on June 22, 1864. He was severely wounded in the leg near Atlanta, Georgia on July 5, 1864. He returned to his unit in time to take part in the Tennessee Campaign.
