Joseph's half-brother and fellow Civil War veteran, William Henning, was profiled in the Washington County, Ohio, regional version of H.H. Hardesty's book Presidents, Soldiers, Statesmen. But that profile called this Joseph "Appleton." The two men came from the same mother, Lavina Taylor Hening Aplin.
