Met and married Donald Lee Evilsizor in 1977 at White Sands Missle Range in New Mexico at the NCO club where he worked. Her best friend was Nancy Powers (now Major Nancy Pilney. Nancy recalls her best friend as follows:
"Sunshine was older than me by a few years and wiser. I truly loved her and an tell you many stories about her! I have a cherished picture of Shirley. We use to take huge pizza pans from the mess hall where she worked and would go the the white sands dunes and sled down them! The picture is of her at the dunes with the sun rays behind her. She was pretending to be in the desert dying of thirst! She had a nice wedding at the chapel on post. One if our friends sang "Sunshine on my shoulders" during their couples dance, at the NCO club.I first met her at the mess hall. My first day at my first duty station WSMR. New in the Army. I walked in and this little blond short gal sees me walking in. She's serving the troops. Looks at me, huge smile, drops her spoon, runs around the counter, gives me a huge hug, the whole time she's telling me she heard about the new gal on post who is actually shorter than she is! She can't believe it! It's really true and here you are. My name is Sunshine whats yours?! Friendly, bubbly and excited to make friends. Turns out her room was right across the hall from mine in the same barracks. You couldn't seperate us after that. We went everywhere together, she was in my wedding there on post, maid of honor. "

Shirley died under questionable circumstances. Her husband Don was charged with her murder but resulted in a mis-trial.

Shirley was married previously to Kenneth Proctor and they had three children in Florida.
