Samuel Houston Alexander was born January 8, 1831 in Tennessee, the son of Nelson Gray Alexander and Mary Patterson. He was married in 1856 in Sumner County, Tennessee to Manerva Catherine Brown. They had seven children:

2. Mary Alexander, b. July 4, 1857
3. Monroe Wilson Alexander b. abt 1859
4. L. R. Alexander, b. 1863
5. Alice Meridian Alexander, b. June 9, 1867
6. Nellie Gray Alexander, b. abt 1870
7. T. Martin Alexander, b. 1872
Samuel, a Confederate soldier, was captured by the Union Army. Sometime after that, he joined the 4th Tennessee Mounted Regiment as a Union soldier. He was a Private in Co. H 4th Tennessee Mounted Volunteers CSA.
Samuel and Manerva were listed in the 1880 census as living in Wilson County, Tennessee. They then relocated to an area northeast of Denton County, Texas, before venturing on to Oklahoma Territory with their children and a couple of Samuel's siblings. By 1895, they had set up their home in Norman, Cleveland County, Oklahoma Territory.
Samuel died in 1897 at his home in Norman, Cleveland County, Oklahoma Territory. He was buried in the IOOF Cemetery at Norman, Cleveland County, Oklahoma Territory.
