Lucy French DeVier was raised in Rockingham County Virginia, the daughter of Allen DeVier, Jr and his wife Nancy Jane (McDorman).
The stone was erected by her granddaughter, Edythe Heatwole - Lucy died in a fire, a stove in her home blew up. Her son, DeWitt, was illegitimate and Lucy never revealed who his father was to anyone except her younger sister, Myrtle.
The story: Per Clinton Miller DeVier as told to Suzanne DeVier, his niece. When my uncle, Charles Wallings DeVier, Jr. graduated from medical school, his father threw him a party in town. Myrtle Bruce (Aunt Bruce) Stebel was invited because she was his great-grandmother's sister. At the party, my uncle revealed that he had decided to return the capital 'V' to the last name - making it DeVier instead of Devier. His father, Charles, Sr. (my grandfather) had removed it when he became the town optometrist because he claimed that it made him seem superior and he didn't want that, so he therefore removed the capital letter. When Uncle Charlie was discussing this, Aunt Bruce became very aggitated and fussed at him, telling him that his last name should be Koogler, not DeVier. She went on to reveal that her sister Lucy French had worked as a maid in the home of the sheriff of Harrisonburg, a John R. Koogler, and that his son, DeWitt Clinton Koogler had raped Lucy. He was still in Rockingham County in 1880 but by 1910 he had married and moved to Oklahoma.
