James enlisted as a Private for 12 months in 1st Company K, 17th Louisiana infantry on October 12, 1861 at Camp Moore. The regiment was reorganized on May 23, 1862 and 1st Company K became 2nd Company H. He was captured and paroled at Vicksburg, Mississippi on July 4, 1863.
