Jane Daffin Abercrombie, 79, of Huntsville died Wednesday, December 10, 2003 at home with her family.

She was born Ethel Jane Daffin on October 27, 1924 in Marianna, Florida, to Charlie Leo Daffin and Myrtle Sills Daffin. She was the sixth of eight children in a close, loving family. Ethel Jane attended West End First Assembly of God Church where her parents were charter members. She graduated from Marianna High School, worked briefly in Marianna, then left with her parents for Columbus, Ga. to join her siblings. There she met James L. Jane and Jim Abercrombie began their married lives in Alabama, but then lived and traveled all over the world because of Jim's position with the Corps of Engineers. They had five children and finally retired and returned to Huntsville, Alabama.

Jane Abercrombie had a passion for life and learning. Her laughter was contagious and her spirit irrepressible. She enjoyed meeting people, talking and sharing, and they were charmed and uplifted by even brief encounters with her.

She was a Realtor for Howard Real Estate Company for five years and she was very active in community affairs. Mrs. Abercrombie was a charter member of the Whitesburg Baptist Church where she taught Sunday School. She assisted in organizing the Women's Republican Club of Huntsville. She was a delegate to the convention and was very active in the GOP.

Survivors include her husband, James L. Abercrombie; two sons, James L. Abercrombie Jr. of Huntsville and Charles D. Abercrombie of Madison; three daughters, Betty Jane Gonzales of Laguna Niguel, Calif., JoAnne Watson of Huntsville, and Judy Abercrombie of San Diego, Calif.; four sisters, Eva Evelyn Daffin Rachels, Murlee Daffin Mizell, Elizabeth Daffin Pafford, Minnie Ola Daffin Houseknecht; two brothers, Lonnie Edgar Daffin, Johnnie E. Daffin, six grandchilden and six great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Monday at Laughlin Service Chapel with Rev. Emerson Lyle officiating. Burial will be in Hopewell Community Cemetery in Hanceville, Alabama.

Jim and Jane Abercrombie were married 58 years. She was loved and cherished and will be sorely missed.

She was preceded in death by her parents; and one brother, Robert Angus Daffin.
