Putnam County News
The death of Mr. I.W. Stewart
On Wednesday of last week an accident occurred to Isaac W. Stewart, Esq. of Florid rendering him unconscious most of the time until Saturday night when he died. He was sawing logs at home with a buzz saw running of horse powder. As a slab came off, it caught on the teeth of the saw which was sent backwards with great force striking Mr. Stewart in the forehead over the right eye, fracturing the skull, and driving it into his brains, rendering him unconscious and causing his death. [text missing] Mr. Stewart was a prominent man in his town and county. Few stood higher in public estimation. Fewer had a clearer head or a larger heart. He was 41 years of age at the time of his death but he had such a keen perception of purity and justice, that he was entirely beyond a mean act and was a man everybody could confide in and whom the neighborhood sought as their friend and advisor. The attendance at his funeral indicated the depth at which his community was stirred. The Presbyterian church at Union Grove, much larger than any in Henry, was crowded and 132 carriages followed the revered dead to his earthly rest. All the country round for miles were present and the obsequies were very solemn and affecting. The infant class which he had taught for a long time at Florid were in the procession. [text missing] The funeral took place at 12 o'clock Monday at the Union Grove Presbyterian church of which he was an efficient and useful member. It was estimated by those competent to judge that 700 persons followed his remains to the grave, being probably the largest number ever present at an occasion of the kind in Putnam County. Mr. Stewart was born and reared to manhood in this county, his father having been one of the pioneers in the first settlement of the county. He was in the 42 year of his age, being in the prime and vigor of life and at the time of the unfortunate accident, which deprived the county one of its most useful and valued citizens.
