Ledith A "Leda" Bernauer was born in 1907 in Elmira, Chemung County, New York, the only child of Edith (Beulah?) Beach Bernauer (1876-1909) and Herbert Edgar Bernauer (1873-1960s). Leda's parents were cousins; their Beach grandfathers were brothers. Her mother died of pneumonia and a heart lesion when Leda was only two years old. Within a few years, her father remarried Hannah "Anna" Unknown, born in 1888 in Pennsylvania. Leda was raised in the Elmira-Horseheads area.
In 1925, at age 18, Leda married Basil S Alexander, 22. By the 1930 census, Herbert, Hannah, and Leda's half-sister Betty Marie were all residing with the Alexanders in Elmira, with Basil listed as head of house. By 1935, the family had relocated to Rochester, Monroe County. It does not appear the Alexanders had children. Leda died Jan 1, 1948 at age 41, and Basil died on New Year's Eve 1998 at age 95.
