Jessie was one of five children born to Robert and Margaret Melville Salmond.

The other children were: Sophia, David, Thomas and James.

Robert Salmond was born in East Wemyss, Fife, Scotland and came to America in 1879 to work in the coal mines in Indiana. His wife Margaret and daughter Sophia came to America later to join him. Both Margaret and Sophia were also born in Scotland. All of the other children were born in Indiana.

Jessie married Robert Davidson August 18, 1933 in Rockford, Winnebago County, Illinois. Robert called Jessie "Betty" after they were married and the family gave her the nickname of "Bet."
