Pedestrian Struck, Killed
An elderly Agency man died at a St. Joseph Hospital Friday evening shortly after he was struck by a station wagon in front of his residence.
The victim was Alexander H. Cooke, 82. He made his home on Route FF, about four miles south of St. Joseph.
The fatal accident occurred shortly before the holiday traffic accident counting period started at 6 p.m.
The Missouri Highway Patrol reported Cooke had left his home about 5:30 p.m. and crossed the road to his mailbox. As he was re-crossing the road he was struck by a southbound vehicle, driven by William I. Brown, 43, Agency.
Troopers said Brown attempted to stop his vehicle, but it slid on the icy pavement. The left rear quarter panel struck Cooke and knocked him about 30 feet.
Officers said Cooke apparently struck his head on the icy pavement, causing massive head and chest injuries. He was taken by ambulance to St. Joseph Hospital, but was pronounced dead at 6:38 p.m., officials said.
