Fatal Shooting of Henry Mitchell Ends Arguments Over Back Rent; Rastus Carroll Is Being Held
Rastus Carroll was being held at the Jacksboro jail this week waiting extradition to Williamsburg, Ky., where he faces charges for the fatal shooting of Henry Mitchell Tuesday afternoon at the residence where the two families lived on the Kentucky side of Jellico.
Mitchell was killed by a blast from a 16-gage shotgun that tore a hole through his breast.
According to Kentucky officials the shooting was the culmination of an altercation between two men over rent allegedly owed Mitchell by Carroll. The later had rented two rooms from Mitchell in the home occupied by the families.
Mrs. Mitchell said at the inquest held at Davenport's store that the two men had an argument over rent money Tuesday morning. Her husband, she said, went to work at a mine in (not legible) Hollow, and on this return (not legible) that afternoon he was called (not legible) the front of the house by Carroll.
Mitchell was seated in the kitchen of the residence with his wife and Mrs. (not legible) at the time. He went to (not legible) of the room and on opening it was met by a blast from the shotgun, Mrs. Mitchell said.
Carroll fled following the shooting and stayed overnight in the mountains on (not legible) Tennessee side. The following (not legible) was placed under arrest by Constable Millard Faulkner in Campbell County and taken to the Jellico jail.
Funeral services for Mitchell were held Thursday.
