OLIVER S. CLAY DIES AT 86
Rites Set for Widely Known Ex-Official
Oliver S. Clay, 86, 618 South Tompkins street, widely known local man, and an auctioneer for 58 years, died at Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis at 3:50 p.m. Sunday. He had been in failing health for six years and seriously ill two weeks.
During his long career as an auctioneer in Indiana, Ohio, Kentucky, Georgia, North Carolina and elsewhere, he took part in annual tobacco auctions in the Madison market.
Mr. Clay, a resident of Shelbyville for 25 years, moved here from Waldron where he had lived for 30 years. He was born in Nicholas County, Kentucky November 2, 1878, and was the son of Matthew Reid and Elizabeth (Shrout) Clay.
Mr. Clay was a member of the First Presbyterian Church and a 50 year member of the Odd Fellows Lodge at Waldron. He was first married to Nancye Williams and she preceded in death in 1929.
On December 26, 1935, he married Flo Del (Moore) Ross and she survives with five children. Mrs. Frank (Myldred) Kolkmeier and Malcolm Clay, both of Shelbyville, Dr. Maurice Clay, Lexington, Kentucky, Earl Clay, Toronto, Canada, and Frank Clay of Fremont, Indiana.
Also surviving are five step-children, Mrs. Ray (Myrtle) Ingermann and Mrs. John (Joy) McNeely, both of Connersville, Jack Ross and Mrs. Boyd (Rebecca) McDonald, both of this city, and Mrs. William (Joan) Koonce of Litchfield, Illinois; eight grandchildren; seven great grandchildren; 12 step-grandchildren and four step-great grandchildren.
Funeral services will be Wednesday at the Carmony Funeral Home. Burial will be in Forest Hill Cemetery.
