Former Waky Fire Chief Dies at 89.
Wakarusa - Chester A. Harrington, 89, of 404 E. Waterford St. died at 3 p.m. Sunday at his residence of complications from several years illness.
He was born in Olive Township May 8, 1884 and was a former Wakarusa businessman. He had served as the town marshal and over 50 years in the Wakarusa Fire Department, including several years as chief.
As chief, he purchased the first hand-drawn chemical tank for the fire department and the first automobile fire engine. He also erected the first fire waning system in Wakarusa and was active in Republican party politics.
He was married to Blanche Martin, June 1904. She died in 1938. Surviving are three sons, Glenn, Elkhart Rt. 5, Howard, Bremen, and Charles, Wakarusa; 15 grandchildren; 26 great-grandchildren; five great-great-grandchildren; a sister, Mrs. Cleo Burkhart, Wakarusa, A daughter, Mrs. Wilma Strycker, died in 1964.
Friends will be received at the Lienhart Funeral Home after 7 p.m. today until services there at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday. The Reverends Willard Conrad and Allen Weldy will officiate. Burial will be in Olive Cemetery.
