HERRINGTON SUCCUMBS TO HIS INJURIES

Injuries received Tuesday by H. Hovey Herrington, New York Central conductor, whose home was at 123 Garfield Avenue, resulted in his death at 9:15 p.m. Wednesday in St Joseph's hospital, Mishawaka.

Death came after a slight improvement following a blood transfusion Wednesday.

Mr. Herrington right chest was badley crushed, and several ribs were broken when he was struck by a passing freight train as he fell from a car of his work-train in the yard at Mishawaka. His fall was caused by the sudden functioning of an air operated dumping device he was attemping to set in motion.

Began in 1909

The deceased had been an employe of the railroad company since May 30, 1909, when he became a freight brakeman. He was promoted to freight conductor in 1918, and since 1937 had been on the list of extra passenger conductors.

The son of David and Christian (Holdeman) Herrington, he was born Aug. 31, 1888, on a farm 2 miles west of Wakarusa. He left the farm in 1907 and after a residence in Minneapolis came to Elkhart about the time he took employment on the railroad. His marriage to Miss Audrey Crume took place in Elkhart on April 15, 1911.

HAD LIVED ON FARM

They moved from Elkhart to a farm south of the Jefferson township school in 1928, returning in the fall of 1940, when they purceased the Garfield Avenue house.
Surviving Mr. Herrington besides the widow are a daughter Mrs. Harry (Audrey) Michels of Indianapolis; a son, Paul W. Herrington, a student at Purdue, and two sisters, Mrs. Zulila Anderson of Elkhart and Mrs. Hannah Billman of Niles, Mich. There also are 4 neices, a son, George Hovey Merrill Herrington, died May 25, 1917, age 3 years.

Mr. Herrington was a member of the First Evangelical church, and last year served as president of the Loyal Men's class of its Sunday. He also held memberships in the local lodges of the Brotherhood of Railroad Trainmen and the Order of Railway Conductors.

The body now at the Dale White funeral home, 129 South Second street will be taken to the family residence this evening, and at noon Saturday it will be removed to the First Evangelical church, to lie in state until the funeral hour 2 p.m. Burial will be in Olive cemetery, South of Jamestown. The Services will be in charge of the Rev. Reuben A. Stauss.
