Mr. Robert Hugh Benton, born on November 30, 1895 in St. Johnsburg, Vermont, the first of seven children born to Hugh and Mary Benton, passed away Thursday, September 30, 2004.
Mr. Benton was attending the University of Washington when he decided to join the Army on September 11, 1917 at the age of twenty years. Inducted at Camp Lewis, Washington, he received awards for marksmanship and horsemanship.
Less than three months after enlisting he was sent to France to fight in "The War to End All Wars". By May 1918, there were over 500,000 U.S. soldiers in France under the command of General John J. Pershing. Mr. Benton was one of them. Having done his duty, he left France for the United States on December 17, 1918.
Robert is survived by his three children, Wayne (Andrea) Benton, of Wisconsin, Edwin (Nancy) Benton, of Puyallup, and Dorothy Dunagan, of Olympia; brother, Alfred Benton, of Seattle; and numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.
Services will take place at Woodlawn Funeral Home Chapel on Friday, October 1, 2004, at 2:00 p.m., with a viewing prior to the services. He will be laid to rest at the Woodlawn Cemetery with military honors.
