Peggy Baughn, transplant group volunteer, dies
By Joe Simnacher,
Staff Writer of The Dallas Morning News
Over the past five years, Peggy and Wayne Baughn of Richardson made numerous trips--often in the middle of the night--to support transplant patients at Baylor University Medical Center in Dallas.
About a year after Mr. Baughn received a heart transplant, the couple became active volunteers of New Hearts and Lungs, which assistes transplant candidates and their families. They wanted to work toward repaying those who had helped Mr. Baughn with his 1991 heart transplant.
On Friday, Margaret "Peggy" Collier Bosworth Baughn, 73, had a massive stroke. She died Saturday.
To her family's surprise, Mrs. Baughn was able to make one final and precious gift to the program she loved. Her kidneys and liver were donated and transplanted.
"That would have made her real happy," said her son, Rick Baughn of Houston.
Services for Mrs. Baughn will be at 2 pm Tuesday at Crestview Baptist Church in Richardson. She will be buried at Restland Memorial Park.
"She and her family were very giving people in life, and it makes sense that in death she wanted to give life,", said Pam Silvestri, community educator for Southwest Transplant Alliance, formerly Southwest Organ Bank.
Michelle Norr, a recovery coordinator with the alliance, said the livers of aging people are often used for transplants. Although kidney function can decrease with age, Mrs. Baughn's good general health made her organs useful, she said.
"She enjoyed just helping families who were devastated knowing that their loved one wouldn't make it unless they got a transplant." her son said.
Mrs. Baughn's work with the program ranged from telling transplant candidate famiies about what was hapening to stocking personal necessities at the Twice Blessed House for families of transplant patients.
Mrs. Baughn was born in Palmerton, Pa. After graduating from the University of Delaware, she did graduate work in physical therapy at the University of Pennsylvania.
She and Mr. Baughn married and lived in Chicago, before he was transferred to Richardson 33 years ago.
New Hearts and Lungs recognized the Baughns' volunteer excellence in 1994 with the Eleanor Belanger Award.
