Eugene Albert VanArsdale of Canyon City died Tuesday, April 17, 2007, at Country Spice residential care facility. He was 96.
A funeral was held on April 20, 2007, at Driskill Memorial Chapel with Reverend Jack Retherford officiating, followed by a reception at the New Life Center. A private family burial was held Monday, April 23, 2007, at the Canyon City Cemetery in Canyon City.
Mr. VanArsdale was born on Oct. 10, 1910, in Northboro, Iowa. In June of 1932, he married Arvilla Mizner in Broken Bow, Neb. He worked on cattle ranches in Nebraska until the late 40s when he moved west, spending a short time in Idaho and Washington before settling in John Day.
Mr. VanArsdale was a builder and built many of the homes in John Day and Canyon City. In 1960, he moved to Redmond, where he continued to work in the building trade for over thirty years. In 1996, he moved back to John Day.
Mr. VanArsdale loved horses and competed in team roping into his 80s.
He is survived by two daughters, Iris Mosley of Canyon City; and Joyce Parker of Hillsboro; four grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.
Preceding him in death were five sisters and three brothers.
