Freda W. Miller, 90, of Lake Charles, La., entered Heaven on Aug. 30, 2007. Freda was born in Arkansas City, Kan., on Sept. 24, 1916. After graduating from Arkansas City High School she attended Arkansas City Junior College, the University of Texas and graduated from Northwestern University in Evanston, Ill., in 1938 with a major in foreign languages. After living in New Orleans for four years, she moved to Lake Charles in 1943. She was a member of the Lake Charles Junior League, Calcasieu Parish Medical Auxiliary, Alpha Chi Omega Sorority, Art Associates and Lake Charles Ballet Society. She was a longtime active member of First Presbyterian Church, where she served as Elder. Her many hobbies included playing bridge, traveling, reading, needlework and china painting, but her greatest joy was her family. She was a devoted mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister and friend. She will be remembered for her unconditional love of family and friends. She is survived by the following: daughter and son-in-law Marilyn and David Grissett, of Enid, Okla.; son and daughter-in-law Dr. Michael and Nancy Rice Miller, of Knoxville, Tenn.; daughter and son-in-law Margie and Butch Standerfer, of Kingwood, Texas; son and daughter-in-law Dr. Martin and Kathy Miller, of Lake Charles; and son Dr. Mark Miller, of Lake Charles; the following twelve grandchildren: Bill Fournet, Todd Grissett, Allison Wilcox, John and Mark Standerfer, Matt, Drew and Todd Miller, Lee and Patty Miller and Alyce and Max Miller; the following eight great-grandchildren: Douglas, David and John Fournet, Holden and Max Grissett, Katherine and Emily Wilcox and Sophia Standerfer. She is also survived by her brother and sister-in-law, Robert and Laurel Wilson, of Virginia Beach, Va., and one niece and three nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, one son, Max M. Miller III and son-in-law Douglas B. Fournet. The family wishes to express their sincere gratitude to Mrs. Elise Reder for her loyal friendship and care of Freda and her family for the past 58 years. A memorial service will be held at 3 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 2, 2007, at the First Presbyterian Church. Dr. Fred Seay and grandson Matt Miller will officiate. Visitation Sunday will be held at the church following the service. A private family burial in Prien Memorial Park will precede the service under the direction of Johnson Funeral Home.
In lieu of flowers the family has requested that memorial donations be made to the First Presbyterian Church, 1801 Second Ave., Lake Charles, LA 70601.
