William enlisted in Schnectady, New York, on 17 May 1861 in Company E, of the 18th New York Infantry. He was discharged on 28 May 1863 at Albany, New York, at the end of his term of service.
For his service, he received pension certificate number 493.813 in 1880.
William was admitted to the National Home for Disabled Volunteer Soldiers, Togus, Maine, on 16 May 1896. He was suffering a dislocation of lumbar spine and wound of left leg, received in the spring of 1863 at White Oak Swamp, Virginia.
He was described as 5' 6", with a light complexion, blue eyes, grey hair. He is a protestant and a farmer and unmarried. He has lived in Burnt Hills, New York, since his discharge. No next-of-kin is noted.
