DAVENPORT — Services for James Joseph and Mary Jane (Hillen) Olson Sr., residents of Davenport, will be held at 7 p.m. today at Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, 4929 Wisconsin St., Davenport, where they were members. Family graveside services will be held at Mt. Calvary Cemetery, Davenport. Memorials for Mrs. Olson may be made to the church and memorials for Mr. Olson may be made to Heartland Hospice. Mrs. Olson died on Sunday, August 1, 2010, at the Select Specialty Hospital, Davenport. Mr. Olson died on Tuesday, August 3, 2010, at his home. McGinnis-Chambers Funeral Home, Bettendorf, is assisting the family with arrangements.
Mary Jane was born November 23, 1944, in Mason Town, Pennsylvania, the daughter of Charles Edward and Iola Mae (Hutzel) Hillen. James Joseph was born July 29, 1941, in Davenport, the son of Harold and Dorothy (Wille) Olson.
They were married in Chicago on February 21, 1964. Mrs. Olson was a devoted homemaker, wife and mother and Mr. Olson worked as an insurance adjuster for Frontier Adjuster's, Cedar Rapids, Iowa.
Mrs. Olson enjoyed arts and crafts and in earlier years, loved to go fishing with her dad. Mr. Olson was an avid bicycle rider and had participated in RAGBRAI several times. In addition, he organized a "Ride for Peace" that involved 25 American riders riding with 25 Russian riders in the Soviet Union and later riding with the same group in the United States.
Their children are Susan Lynn (Brian) Olson, James J. (Nora) Olson Jr., of Holly Springs, North Carolina, and John (Linda) Olson, of Ames, Iowa; their grandchildren, Justin, Darreyl, Nicholas, Emili, Alexandria and Austin; and their great-grandchildren, Angela and Miles. Additional survivors are her sisters, Aileen, in Virginia, and Annie and Gerri, both in Pennsylvania; his sisters, Margaret, of Davenport, Lillian, in Florida, and Mary, in Iowa City; and his brother, Bernard, in Illinois.
Mary Jane was preceded in death by her brothers, Don and George. In addition to his wife, James Joseph was preceded in death by his sister, Pat.
