John E. Mellyn Sr., 96 of Dover, died Sunday January 16th 2011 at the Inn at Spruce Wood in Durham, NH after a period of declining health.
John was born on April 23, 1914 in Lynn, MA to Hubert P. and Eleanor (Craven) Mellyn. He graduated from Lynn English High School and attended Franklin Technical Institute and MIT Evening School. He was a long time employee of the General Electric Co. and held supervisory positions in Lynn and Somersworth, NH. John lived the last fifty years of his life in Dover, NH after relocating his family upon accepting a new position with General Electric in 1961.
During World War II John served in the US Army Eighth Air Force in England. He holds the Distinguished Flying Cross, The Air Medal with three Oak Leaf Clusters, the Purple Heart and European African Middle Eastern Campaign Medal with Two Battle Stars. He was also a life member of the Disabled American Veterans Bellamy Chapter No. Five.
John was an avid golfer and a long time member of the Cochecho Country Club. He was a trustee of the Dover Public Library for many years.
John was predeceased by his wife, Marie Margaret [née Richard] Mellyn of Dover, his three brothers: Hubert F. Mellyn Jr. of Lynnfield, MA; Charles W. Mellyn of Valatie, NY and Lawrence Stanley Mellyn. of Pompono Beach, FL, and his sister, Doris (Mellyn) Kearney of Lynn, MA.
John leaves behind three children; John E. Mellyn Jr. and his wife, Mary of Solon, OH; Kevin L. Mellyn and his wife, Judith , of Bronxville, NY; and Joyce (Mellyn) Mannix and her husband, Jack, of Chestnut Hill, MA; his grandchildren; Jack, Kaitlin and Susan Mannix of Chestnut Hill, MA; John E. (Jack) Mellyn III and his wife, Amanda, of Washington, D.C. and James Mellyn of Solon, OH.
Family and friends are invited to call on Friday January 21st 2011 from 4-7 PM at Tasker Funeral Home 621 Central Ave in Dover. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Saturday January 22nd 2011 at 10:00 AM at the Parish of The Assumption at St. Mary's Church (corner of Chestnut & Third Street) in Dover. Spring burial will take place in the Massachusetts National Cemetery in Bourne, MA.
