John Cridge was born in 1790 in Chard near Taunton, Somerset, England and probably christened in Thurlbear. His parents are currently unknown (Possibly Thomas Cridge and Sarah Channing. According to LDS, Thomas was a carpenter). He married Maria Beaton (daughter of William Beaton and Jane Burnell) on March 19, 1826 at the Parish Church of St. Mary Magdalene in Taunton, Somerset, England (The witnesses present were Matilda Beaton and John Beaton). The officiant was Rev. Henry Bower. The Cridges had two children named Edmund John (born on Sept. 1, 1828 in Taunton) and Alfred H. (born c. 1837 in New York). The family lived at Harmony Row in Taunton (the East Gate/East Reach area), Somerset, England. They then came over to New York from Bristol, England on "Ship Superb". The Cridges arrived on May 11, 1832 and settled in Troy, NY. John was a carpenter and became a naturalized U.S. citizen in or before 1855 (1855 New York census). In 1860 he lived at Ninth near Jacob. In 1870 he was at 99 Ninth (rear house). John died on May 4, 1873 in Troy.
Note: John's wife and children are buried in the same family plot.
