VIROQUA, Wis. - LeRoy Gronemus, 73, of 417 Independence Court, Viroqua, died Saturday, Jan. 12, 2002, at the Bethel Home in Viroqua, where he had been a resident since August 2001.
He was born Feb. 27, 1928, in Vernon County to Joseph and Pauline (DeChant) Gronemus. He served in the U.S. Navy for about two years. On Aug. 22, 1950, he was united in marriage to Mary Flock at St. Mary's Ridge Catholic Church, near Cashton, Wis. They farmed in the Westby, Wis., area until 1973, when they moved to Westby where LeRoy was employed by Tri-State Breeders until he retired in 1990. They have lived in Viroqua for about eight years. He was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church in Viroqua and the Westby American Legion.
He is survived by his wife, Mary of Viroqua; two daughters and four sons, Jean (Tom) Myhre of La Crosse, Sue (Scott) Schmitz of Cashton, Dan (Cathy) Gronemus of Madison, Don (Connie) Gronemus of Cuba City, Wis., David (Robin) Gronemus of Chesapeake, Va., and Tom Gronemus of Viroqua. He is also survived by 12 grandchildren; two step grandchildren; three sisters, Louise (Fritz) Schroeder, Lorraine (Gordon) Hanson and Jo Anne (Henry) Kast, all of Sparta; and one brother, Lambert (Barbara) Gronemus of Whitehall. He was preceded in death by his parents; four sisters, Martha Hundt, Virgil Nelson, Betty Schroeder, and Jeanette Brueggen; and one brother, Norbert Gronemus.
A Mass of Christian burial will be held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, Jan. 15, 2001, at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Viroqua. Father Michael Gorman will officiate with burial in Sacred Heart Catholic Cemetery near Cashton. Friends may call at Larson Funeral Home in Viroqua Monday from 4 to 8 p.m., with a rosary service at 7:30 p.m. Friends also may call at the funeral home Tuesday from 9:30 until 10 a.m.
