|Death: ||Jan. 16, 1922|
Bessie was orphaned at 8 years old. After leaving Tennessee with the Humbolt family, Bessie was their maid-of-all-work on a farm in central Kansas, near Ellis. They built and lived in a sod house heated by a single fireplace. Bessie was allowed to go to school when the farmwork would permit. A Doctor in the area took an interest in her and loaned her books to study. Eventually he assisted her to enter the School of Nursing, at the Stormont Hospital, Topeka, Kansas.
Bessie graduated from Stormont Hospital School of Nursing and became a Registered Nurse at Stormont for several years, then moved to the Santa Fe Hospital, in Topeka where she met and married Fred Erwin Hale, the hospital pharmacist.
In her later years Bessie attempted to manage a small ranch in Texas.
