Tour of Original Betty Crocker's Home Supports Valley Center Museum

Valley Center - The open house and tour of the home of Betty Crocker was the first event to mark the establishmnent of The Guardian Fund, an endowment fund to support the Valley Center Museum.
"By the end of the day, we counted $117,000 in donations," said Bob Lerner, executive director of the museum. "This includes both pledges and checks. Some of the donations arrived before the event. We're pretty thrilled with this figure. This is about 40 percent of our ultimate goal of $250,000."
About 100 people came to the December 2nd event and at least another 100 were turned away for lack of room. Tables decorated in red and green and holding poinsettias were set-up outside the barn where guests mingled. They were served cheese and wine and entertained by the barbershop quartet, "A Song and a Smile," while they waited for their turn to take a tour of Betty Crocker's House originally built in 1883.
The house changed owners several times over the years and is now the home of Marla Wheeler and Keith Alen, but at one time, it was lived in by AGNES WHITE, the original BETTY CROCKER, Lerner said. White was one of several women who created and tested recipes for the company that made Gold Medal Flour.
In 1925, Betty acquired a voice with the debut of the Betty Crocker Cooking School of the Air, which was broadcast nationwide by NBC. She remained a radio personality for 17 years, Lerner said.
White lived in the house until her death at age 84 in 1979. She is buried in Valley Center Cemetery. The Guardian Fund is an endowment fund in which all monies are invested and only the accrued interest is used to support the museum. The fund was set-up in September.
