He was born Sept. 13, 1923, in New Knoxville to Harvey and Caroline Kuck Shuster, who preceded him in death. On Aug. 5, 1950, he married Mary Lou Schwaiger, who survives in Kettlersville.
Mr. Shuster retired in 1986 from Hoge Lumber Co., New Knoxville. He was a member of Immanuel United Church of Christ, Kettlersville, where had served as an elder, a deacon and had been the custodian. He was a life member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 4239, AMVETS Post 1989, Disabled American Veterans Chapter 48, 40/8 Post 367 and American Legion Post 217, where he had served as commander, all in Sidney. He was a former chaplain of American Legion District 2 and was currently serving as its National Securities chairman. He had served on the American Legion Department of Ohio Credentials Committee, the Shelby County Memorial Monumental Building board of trustees, the Anna School Board, the Shelby County Republican Central Committee, the Shelby County Board of Elections and the Kettlersville village council. He had been a clerk for Van Buren Township and a 36-year member of the Kettlersville-Van Buren Township Fire Department. He had played baseball in the Western Ohio Semi-pro League for several years and on several local slow- and fast-pitch softball teams. He was an Army veteran of World War II, serving in the European Theater as a sergeant with C Battery, 217th Field Artillery Battalion, 44th Infantry Division.
Survivors also include two sons, Brian (Lynn) Shuster and Barton (Annette) Shuster, both of Kettlersville; six daughters, Lucinda (Martin) Bowman, Genevieve (Neil) Schroer and Camille (Kenny) Young, all of Anna, Michele (Leo) Borchers of Fort Loramie, Denise (John) Koverman of McCartyville and Corrine (Mike) Prenger of Botkins; a sister, Audrey (Harold) Wietholter of New Bremen; and 31 grandchildren and 20 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by four brothers, a sister and a great-grandson.
Services will begin at 11 a.m. today at American Legion Post 241, New Bremen. The Revs. James Melter and Will Cook will officiate. Burial will be Thursday in Ohio Western Reserve National Cemetery, Rittman.
