Ansterberg drove in the 1923 & 1924 Indianapolis 500, Ansterburg also held the World record for the fastest lap on a mile-and-a-quarter board track.

Ernest Putnam Ansterburg was born on October 1, 1891 in Concord, Michigan. He participated in the 1924 Indianapolis 500. He was killed in a crash at Charlotte Speedway in Charlotte, North Carolina on October 16, 1924 during a practice lap at the age of 33. He had been a teammate and protégé of Detroit-born Joe Boyer who started as Joe's riding mechanic with the Frontenac team in 1919, and died two months after he crashed while he tested at the newly constructed board track in Charlotte North Carolina a week before its inaugural race. The steering drag link, apparently overloaded by g-forces, broke and the Duesenberg flipped end over end through the upper guardrail. Boyer had been killed on September 2, 1924, in a crash at Altoona Speedway in Pennsylvania.

1924 Indianapolis 500
Lora Lawrence Corum started the race in the #15 entry, and was relieved during the race by Joe Boyer. Boyer proceeded to drive the car to victory, and both drivers were credited as "co-winners" for the 1924 race. Boyer led the first lap of the race in his original #9 entry. After Boyer got out of the car and took over the #15, the #9 entry continued in the race, taken over by Ernie Ansterburg, Corum, and later Thane Houser. Houser crashed the car after 176 laps, and Boyer's original car was credited with 18th place. Antoine Mourre and fellow rookie Ernie Ansterburg tangled on the back stretch during the race’s second lap. Ansterburg’s Duesenberg hit the wall and was eliminated.
