Robert R. Carruthers was born in Kincaid Township, Jackson County, Ill., in 1923, one of two sons of Samuel Ernest and Mary Augusta (Kessel) Carruthers.
He graduated from Gorham High School with the Class of 1939, and then attended Southern Illinois Normal University in Carbondale. In the 1943 SINU Obelisk, Robert is listed as postponing his college career in order to serve his country during World War II. He enlisted in the United States Navy from 1941 through 1945 and again from 1951 through 1952.
Carruthers joined Crowell, Collier and Macmillan, Inc., in 1952 as assistant manager of the Minneapolis branch office, and was promoted to branch manager the following year. In 1964 he was national field superintendent of the subscription book subsidiary of the company. While living in Minneapolis, he graduated from Gustavus Adolphus College in St. Peter, Minn.
Carruthers was elected vice president for administration of P.F. Collier Inc., of New York in Nov. 1968.
