Ralph, of Greenwood, Sussex Co., DE, a former longtime resident of Laurel, Sussex Co., was born in Haywood County, NC to Dorsie and Virginia (nee Shifflet) Spitzer. He grew up in the Shenandoah Valley of Virginia.

He was the husband of Helen Mills Spitzer (1925-2005), to whom he was married for sixty-one years, and with whom he shares a grave monument. (See Helen's Find A Grave memorial in this cemetery for additional family details.)

Ralph was predeceased by Helen and his brothers Cecil and Theodore Spitzer and sister Frances Bishop.

Ralph showed a talent for writing while in high school and was a freelance writer until his last few years.

He served as a 9 12 half year veteran of the US Navy, serving the duration of WWII. He served aboard several destroyers and was engaged in many battles. He was aboard the USS Haynsworth in the Pacific when his ship was hit by a kamikaze plane at Okinawa and returned to Mare Island, CA under her own power.

Retiring from Ambric Testing and Engineers, Ralph also worked for Eastern States Farmers Exchange (now Agway), and he owned a Hallmark Card and Gift store in Laurel, DE.

He was an avid master gardener, a longtime member of the Western Sussex Democrat Club, and of the Laurel American Legion Post #19.
