Middletown Times-Press Friday, July 13, 1917: Youngsville Man Shoots Himself; Bert L. Stoddard Puts Bullet Into Brain: Bert L. Stoddard, aged 40 a prominent business man of Youngsville, caused a shock to the community Tuesday evening by sending a bullet into his brain, bringing instant death. Mr. Stoddard, who a few years ago gave up blacksmithing and engaged in the sale of hardware and farm machinery, was about home and business as usual Tuesday. Early in the evening he went to the barber shop and got shaved, telling Barber Durr that was the last time he would shave him. From this and other remarks at times, it is now apparent that Mr. Stoddard had for some time contemplated taking his life, though no motive is known for the deed other than his casual remark, "life was not worth living." When he came in the house Tuesday evening about 7:30 he threw off his jumper, and when asked if he wouldn't have supper said no, he didn't feel good. He went upstairs to his room and shortly after a shot was heard. On going to his room members of the household found Mr. Stoddard lying on his back across the bed with only his coat removed. A revolver which lay beside him and a bullet wound between his right eye and the upper bridge of the nose quickly explained the situation. Coroner-Physician Gain, of Jeffersonville was called, and later Undertaker Brand took charge of the body. The funeral was held Thursday at 2 o'clock, with a house service by Rev. J.K. Stadelmann of the Presbyterian Church and burial in the Union Cemetery. The Masonic Lodge of Jeffersonville and the Odd Fellows Lodge of Youngsville escorted the body to the grave.
