THOMAS ABBOTT ANSWERS LAST ROLL ALL.
END CAME LAST NIGHT.
At ten o'clock last evening Thomas Abbott, an old soldier who fought through the greater part of the Civil War and has been a resident of this city for a number of years, answered the last great roll call and passed into the great beyond.
Since the death of his wife several years ago, the deceased was staying at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Newton Berry, at 2123 North D street. Some time ago, Mr. Abbott had suffered a stroke of paralysis from which he never recovered, and the end last night was not unexpected.
The funeral will be held at the home of the relatives where he died, tomorrow at two o'clock, the Rev. Albert Jones in charge. Interment in the city cemetery.
Mr. Abbott has been a resident of this city for several years and leaves a host of friends to mourn him. He was a veteran of the Civil War having enrolled in Battalian [sic] 69, Indiana Infantry Volunteers on July 5, 1862. He served through the war and was mustered out with his regiment three years later on July 5, 1865.
He was a member of the local post G.A.R. and all of his comrades will be present at the funeral to pay their last tribute to their departed comrade. (Elwood Call Leader, April 6, 1909.)
Thomas Abbott was the son of Morgan Abbott and Sarah Branson, was born in Howard County, Indiana. Mr. Abbott joined the army and was in the Civil War for three years He was a Private in Company C, 69th Indiana Volunteer Infantry, and he was honorably discharged on July 5, 1865. He married Sarah Jane Vaughn on Jan. 7, 1856 at Randolph County, Indiana. Sarah was the daughter of John Vaughn and Sarah Fallis. Thomas and Sarah had the following children: Martha Rosa, born November 5 1857; Christina, born iin 1859; Jane, born in 1862; Leivea, born in 1870; and Jessa, born in 1873.
Thomas Abbott is buried in an unmarked grave, in the location shown in the photo.
