Dr. Robert Louis Benson, 76, Portland physician-pioneer in the field of allergy, died Sunday of a stroke at Providence hospital.
Dr. Benson, whose home was at 3003 N.E. 30th avenue, had practiced in Portland for the past 45 years, but was in semi-retirement the last few because of ill health.
He is best known for his pioneer work in the then little known field of allergy, beginning in 1915, and also for his heart research.
He was born in Flint, Mich., May 30, 1880, and was educated at Saginaw, Mich., receiving his bachelor's degree in 1902 and his master's in 1904 from the University of Michigan.
He received his M.D. degree from the University of Chicago in 1910. From 1910 to 1912 he was a bacteriologist for the Florida state board of health, coming to Portland in 1912, when he became an assistant professor of anatomy at the University of Oregon medical school for a year. In 1913, he became professor of pathology, a post he held in addition to his private practice, until 1929, when he was made assistant professor of medicine.
He was a major in the army medical corp in World War I.
In 1933, he was chairman of the governor's interim committee for the study of public health and welfare. He was a member of the state board of health and its president from 1935 to 1940. He was also a member of the state public welfare commission from 1934 to 1941 and since 1934 had been a member of the city of Portland health advisory board.
He was author of many articles in national medical journals, particularly on allergy and heart research.
He held memberships in the American Medical Association, the American Heart Association, the American Association for the Advancement of Science, the American Association of Allergy, the Pacific Interurban Clinical Club, the North Pacific Society of Internal Medicine, the Portland Academy of Medicine and the city and county medical societies. He was also a fellow in the American College of Physicians and a member of the University Club, Phi Beta Pi, Sigma Xi and Alpha Omega Alpha.
He married Hazel Altman in Portland, Septemer 8. 1915. She survives as do two daughters, Mrs. Nancy B. Drake, Portland, and Mrs. Ralph C. Altman, Los Angeles; one son, Robert L. Benson II, New York and three grandchildren.
Requiem mass will be offered Wednesday at 10:30 am at the Church of the Madeleine. Interment will be at Mt. Calvary cemetery and recitation of the rosary Tuesday at 8 pm at the chapel of Hennessey, Goeisch and McGee.
The family has suggested that any remembrance be in the form of contributions to the heart fund.
