The funeral of William F. Bess of Granger, assistant superintendent of the Granger Ward Sunday School, who death occurred at 8:00 p.m. Friday night, will be held at 1:30 p.m. tomorrow afternoon at the Banks Undertaking Chapel in Murray. The burial will be at the Taylorville Cemetery.
Mr. Bess was born July 24, 1884. He leaves his mother, Mrs. Mary Alice Mawson of Salt Lake; one brother, John H. Bess, Granger; one sister, Mrs. Lola Latimer, Salt Lake, and three children: Velma May, 10 years old; Mary Lucille, 8 and William Grant, 14 months. Mr. Bess died February 7, 1918. The funeral will be held Wednesday at 1:30 p.m.

William Franklin Bess was born July 24, 1884 in Salt Lake County, Utah. He was the son of Mormon pioneers, James Lawrence Bess and Mary Alice Dykman. William's father, James Bess was 15 years old when he came to the Utah Territory in 1848. James traveled with his family in the wagon train company of Heber C. Kimball. William's mother Mary Alice Dykman arrived in the Utah Territory with her family in 1864. William was the 8th of the Bess' 12 children and lived in the Granger area of Salt Lake County. William married Mary Breeze in the Salt Lake Temple in 1906 and they had two daughters, Velma May Bess (1908) and Mary Lucille Bess (1911.) In 1913, his wife Mary contracted tuberculosis and died at the age of 25, leaving William to care for their two young children alone.
William then married Lillie Maud Petersen (also of Granger) in the Salt Lake Temple on June 7, 1916. Lillie gave birth to a son William Grant Bess on January 31, 1918 but died a week later of complications due to childbirth. Lillie was 27 years old. One year later, Lillie's older sister Mabel Petersen died at the age of 30 of influenza and pneumonia. William died 12 days later of the same illnesses. He was 34 years old. Within a month of the deaths of Mabel and William, a posthumous temple sealing was performed on their behalf in the Salt Lake Temple, suggesting Mabel and William may have had plans to marry before their deaths. William's oldest daughter Velma was raised by his sister Lola Bess Latimer, his second daughter Mary was raised by his mother and his son was raised by his in-laws, Nelsen and Sarah Petersen. William Bess, Mary Breeze, Lillie Petersen and Mabel Petersen were all buried in the Taylorsville Memorial Park Cemetery in Taylorsville, Utah.
