Rev. C. G. W. Sigelen served Jerusalem Evangelical Lutheran Church on Belair Road, in Gardenville, from 1877 to about 1895. According to a brief biography found in J.E.L.C.'s 1917 anniversary booklet, Pastor Sigelen attended the Basel Missionary Seminary in Basel, Switzerland, with the minister of St. Matthew's Ev. Lutheran Church in Baltimore City, Rev. Ludwig Daniel Maier (b. 25 Jan 1824, Germany; d. 1883, Baltimore, MD). Rev. Maier had a large hand in bringing Rev. Sigelen to Baltimore from Unity, Columbia County, Ohio, where he had served a Lutheran congregation there for 27 years. He retired due to failing health.

He and his wife Maria D. (Lipps)Sigelen (d. 26 Feb 1897, Baltimore Co., MD) had four children, all born in Ohio: Bertha, Mary, Christian Albert, and Emma. At the time of his death, they lived on Gorsuch Avenue near Harford Road. Christian eventually moved to Indianapolis. Bertha worked as a music teacher, and her sister Mary supported herself as a dressmaker. They lived together on Bond Street, along with a niece, Marie Soine, also a music teacher. By 1930, Bertha and Mary were supporting themselves by caring for children in their home. Emma's husband, G. William Soine, died in 1910.
