William Bailey was born in Cook County,
Tennessee. He was an “old” soldier compared to most,
when he first enlisted in what was then known as
Battery D of the USA, 1st Tennessee Heavy Artillery
(which soon became Company E of the USA,
1st Tennessee Light Artillery Battalion [aka:
"Regiment"], Co. E), being 38 years of age and having
been married (Mary Elizabeth Blanchard) at least
seventeen years already. William served until his
discharge following the war on 8/1/1865.
