BERKELEY SPRINGS, W.Va. - Ida Kathern Allemong, longtime resident of Morgan County, W.Va., passed away peacefully at her home on Oct. 29, 2005, at the age of 92. She was under the loving care of family, hospice and dedicated caregivers. She enjoyed wonderful physical and mental health until the last few months of her life.

Kathern was born March 12, 1913, in the Ridge area of Morgan County at the home of her parents, Floyd H. and Melvie R. Hovermale Ruppenthal. The family moved to Stotlers Crossroads in 1917, to Horse Ridge (now Fairview Drive) in 1923 and to Martinsburg Road in 1931, where Floyd operated a gasoline service station and tourist cabins.

She graduated from Bath District High School in 1931 and attended Shepherd College for two years thereafter. Then she taught school in Morgan County at Spohrs Crossroads, New Hope and Red Hill. On June 20, 1937, she married Lewis A. Allemong of Morgan County. They moved to Washington, D.C., where she worked for the General Accounting Office until her first child was born. The family returned to Morgan County in 1949.

After raising her three children, she returned to teaching elementary school in Berkeley Springs in the late 1950s. Anxious to continue her education, she attended Shepherd College and obtained her degree in 1961. Additionally, she did graduate work at West Virginia University and Shippensburg College.

In 1975, she retired from teaching and began working earnestly in the field of local genealogy. Her interest in this area was inspired by her 10th-grade English teacher, Kathryn Taylor Johnson. She had compiled and published or co-published several family histories, obituaries, graveyard histories, school histories and the Genealogical History of Morgan County and its People. In 2002, she was honored with the West Virginia History Hero Award by the state legislature.

Kathern was a long and faithful member of First United Methodist Church (and its predecessors) on Green Street in Berkeley Springs. She was a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution, Morgan County Historical and Genealogical Society, West Virginia Association of Retired Persons, National Retired Teachers Association and Morgan County Retired School Employees.

She is survived by her three sons; eight grandchildren and stepgrandchildren. Surviving also are numerous great-grandchildren; nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Lewis, in 1973; and sister, Naomi Ruppenthal Newbraugh, in 1971.

Funeral services will be conducted Tuesday, Nov. 1, 2005, at 11 a.m. at First United Methodist Church on Green Street in Berkeley Springs with Pastor Andrew Cooney officiating. Interment will be in Greenway Cemetery.

The family will receive friends Monday, Oct. 31, 2005, from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. at Hunter-Anderson Funeral Home, Berkeley Springs. The funeral home will be open all day Monday after 9 a.m. for the convenience of friends.
