Daniel served as a private in the 208th Regiment, Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry, Company I (Civil War).

He married Margaret Crane, ten years his senior, and fathered Jane (b. @1853), Mary E. (b. @1855), Benjamin (b. @1859). In 1860, he was a laborer living in Buffalo Township, Perry County, Pennsylvania, and stood 5' 8" tall with dark hair and blue eyes.
A Civil War veteran, he enlisted in Harrisburg September 1, 1864, mustered into federal service there September 3 as a private with Co. I, 208th Pennsylvania Infantry, and honorably discharged with his company June 1, 1865.
