GRANDMA ANDERSON PASSED AWAY AT GROVER TODAY
After a lingering illness brought on by old age, Grandma Anderson (as she was best known by that name) passed away to her final rest, August 29th, she was the mother of Mrs Christopherson of Afton and Ole, John and Joseph Anderson. She has lived in Grover for the past 20 years. Her husband is also buried in the Grover Cemetery.
The death of Sister Rebecca Anderson at her home in Grover, on the 29th day of August 1924, marked the passing from mortal action of a dear old soul who has truly filled a well rounded life of service to others in a quiet, unassuming and oftimes, unobserved manner through her faithful, self sacrificing devotion to her family and friends with whom she had the pleasure of associating in this life.
She was born in Everod Sweden Dec 28, 1840 and it was there and within the nearby vicinity that she spent her girlhood days in her characteristic jovial, cheerful way and became acquainted with the young man Neils Anderson, to whom she was married on her birthday anniversary in 1869.
It was not until after their marriage that either of them heard of the "Mormon" church; but, fortunately they both received a testimony of the divinity of this great latter-day work and Sister Anderson was baptized into the church Nov 23, 1873 by N.L. Hogberg, Brother Anderson being baptized by Ola Hanson March 29, 1874.
The spirit of gathering with the main body of the Saints soon actuated them and on June 22, 1875, they with their two eldest children, Oley and Ingry together with other Saints sang their farewell to the dear old land of their nativity as the boat slowly tugged out from the shore line in Malmo harbor. They arrived at Salt Lake city July 22 of the same year.
Shortly afterward they purchased a small farm of unimproved land in South Jordan, Utah, where they made their home and lived mainly until they migrated to Star Valley locating at Grover in 1895. They also made their home for a number of years in Brighton (3 miles west) Star Valley, two sons Oley and Joseph have had the pleasure of fulfilling missions in Sweden.
Grandma Anderson as she was commonly called is the mother of four sons, Oley, now living in Utah; John and Joseph, of Grover; and Hyrum who died at the age of 14 months; and two daughters Mrs Ingry Christopherson of Afton, Wyo.;and Mary, who died at 14 years of age. She has 21 grandchildren and three great grandchildren all living.
The condition brought about by what the physician pronounced a tumor and her old age, which eventually resulted in her death, came very suddenly and unexpected, rendering her bedfast and almost completely helpless from the 28th day of last May.
Although loving sympathetic members of the family and others in the ward did all in the power and wisdom for her recovery and comfort she passed sweetly and peacefully to the greater life beyond on Friday Aug 29, 1924, at the age of 83 years 8 months and one day.
Funeral services were held in the Grover chapel commencing at 2 p.m. Sunday, Aug 31, 1924, under the direction of Bishop Ray S. Thurman. The speakers were Elders A.C. McCombs, G. W. Hepworth, E. M. Thurman, L.C. Jensen and Bishop Ray S. Thurman. All spoke in high terms eulogizing the character of the deceased and encouraging faith in the gospel. Music was very nicely rendered by the ward choir conducted by Brother Mark Hurd. The following hymns were sung; "Though deepening Trials," "Resting Now From Care and Sorrow," "Mid Scenes of Confusion" and "Rest Rest, for the Weary Soul." Invocation was pronounced by Elder Olef J. Hokanson and benediction by Elder Soren A. Jensen. The remains were escorted to the Grover cemetery where interment was made to her peaceful resting place beside her husband who passed from mortal life nearly 22 years ago. The dedicatory prayer was offered by elder L.J. Halling.
