Vernon R. Tschiegg, 80, 3691 Dornoch Drive, formerly of Hackett Road, Apple Creek, passed away Sunday morning, March 20, 2005, at Regency Park Nursing & Rehabilitation Center in Orrville, after a period of declining health.

Services will be Friday at 10 a.m. at Orrville Christian Church, 925 N. Elm St., Orrville, with Pastor Dave Daum officiating. Burial will be at Crown Hill Cemetery in Orrville, where military rites will be conducted.

Friends may call Thursday from 6-8 p.m. at the church, where Masonic services will be held at 8 p.m., or one hour prior to the services.

Memorial contributions may be sent to Wayne County Historical Society, 546 E. Bowman St., Wooster 44691, where his Cherry Hill Collection of woodworking and carvings were donated; Apple Creek Volunteer Fire Department, 3400 S. Apple Creek Road, Apple Creek 44606; or to a charity of the donor's choice.

He was born Feb. 19, 1925, in Bluffton to Albert L. and Bessie M. (Diller) Tschiegg. Later his family moved to the Wayne County area, and he attended Smithville Schools. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II in the Asiatic Pacific Theater as a machine gunner and was awarded the Purple Heart for injuries sustained in battle.

He was united in marriage to Betty L. (Schondel) Ramsier on July 31, 1986, in Orrville. She survives.

He was the former owner/operator of Millborne Mobile Manor near Orrville, for more than 30 years, retiring in the 1990s. Following retirement, he started his hobby of woodworking and carvings, and had an extensive collection he named the "Cherry Hill Collection" after his mini-orchard of cherry trees on his property.

He served his community for 25 years as an East Union Township Trustee, and was a member of Orrville Christian Church, Cedar Lodge 430 F&AM of Orrville and was a 32nd degree Mason of Canton.

Surviving in addition to his wife, Betty Tschiegg, are daughters, Pam (Charles) Dalessandro and Kris (Tom) Purdy, both of Orrville; 10 grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; brothers, Robert (Mary) Tschiegg, Donovan (Ruth) Tschiegg, Roger (Cathy) Tschiegg and Larry Tschiegg, all of Orrville; his twin sister, Verena (Dean) Bricker of Moreland, and sister, Jane Orr of Apple Creek.

His parents, a 2-year-old sister, Julia Tschiegg, and a brother-in-law, Alonzo Orr, died previously.
