Carl is the son of Thomas and Hortense (née Reed) Applegate. In 1880, he resided in the home of his parents in Yoncalla, Douglas County, Oregon.

He served in the United States Army, as a private during the Spanish American War, with his induction in the service on June 26, 1898. [Source: Presidio of San Francisco Records]

By the 1910 United States Census he is listed in the 5th Township, Glenn, CA.

He completed his registration for World War I in Willows, Glenn County, on Sep 17, 1918, a resident of Butte City. [WWI Draft Records, online, Ancestry.]

By 1920, he is recorded at Road 141, Westside, Glenn, CA. He is shown as registered to vote in Princeton, Afton, and "Glenn County" in 1919, 1921, 1923, 1925, 1927. [US Census Records,; California Voter Registration records, Ancestry.]

By occupation, he was listed as a farmer - Hay and Fruit.
Marin Journal Thursday, July 20, 1933, page 4: Carl Reed Applegate, 54, resident of Marin County for many years, died Tuesday afternoon at his home at Larkspur following a heart attack.

Applegate, who had formerly resided in San Rafael, removed to Larkspur 2 years ago, when he bought a home there. He was an agent for a line of household products, and previous to that had been a guard at San Quentin prison. He was a veteran of the Spanish American War.

He is survived by his widow, Mrs. Helen Applegate; his mother, Mrs. Flora Applegate, of Portland, and 6 brothers, one of whom, Homer Applegate, resides at Sausalito.

Funeral services will be held Friday morning at 9 o'clock at the parlors of Miss Mary Eden on C Street. Interment will take place at the National Cemetery at the Presidio in San Francisco.-obit courtesy FAG volunteer Carolyn Schwab, via email June 21, 2015.
