Rachel Jackson Baker, devoted wife, mother, and grandmother, died March 8, 2002 in Salt Lake City, Utah at the age of 80.

Born in Provo, UT March 17, 1921 to Henry Jackson and Amanda Rozilla Allred. She was raised in a large, loving family of two boys and five girls who have enjoyed each other throughout their lives.

Rachel graduated from Provo High School and attended Brigham Young University where she met Grant Watkins Baker in Professor Sauer's band class. The bassoon player and bass clarinetist made music together and were married in the Salt Lake LDS Temple April 16, 1941 for time and all eternity.

Rachel was an active and faithful member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Music was a significant part of her life, serving as choir director and conducting many great cantatas and weekly performances with the McKay Ward Choir. Her musical talents were used in the various organizations of the Church. Mom knew and loved the old songs and continued to be an avid viewer of Lawrence Welk. She knew the words to every song.

Mom took seriously her sacred responsibilities of being a mother and wife. She faithfully supported her husband, and watchfully cared for and taught her children. Her generous nature opened her home to all family members. Her hands were always busy with needlepoint and quilts, and beautiful afghans for her grandchildren. After each Thanksgiving our home was cooled for chocolate dipping. Caramel marshmallows were made for every family party. Mom dedicated her life in service to her family.

She is survived by her four children, Roger Grant (Pam) Baker, Ephraim, Beverly (Kenneth) Crockett, Midvale, Kent Jackson (Julie) Baker, South Jordan. Elise (Rick) Hellstrom, Riverton; along with 20 grandchildren; 18+ great-grandchildren; sisters, Ellen Orgill, Phoenix, AZ, Louise (Max) Hunt, Snowflake, AZ; and brother, Joseph W. (Carma) Jackson, Provo. Rachel was preceded in death by her loving husband, Grant Watkins Baker; infant son, Craig Jackson Baker; sisters, Amy Berrett, Audrey Hiller; and brother, Orrin Henry Jackson.

Services will be Thurs. March 14, 2002, 1 p.m., McKay Ward LDS Chapel, 1623 S. 500 E, Salt Lake City. Family and friends may call Wed. March 13, 6-7:30 p.m., Larkin Mortuary, 260 E. South Temple, Salt Lake City, and Thurs. at the church 11:30 a.m.-12:45 p.m. Interment, Wasatch Lawn Memorial Park, 3401 S. Highland Dr, Salt Lake City.

We, her family, are grateful for the opportunity to have served and cared for our Mom these past years. She taught us and sang us much.

"Rest, rest for the weary, Peace, peace to the soul; Though life may be dreary, Earth is not thy goal"

"O lay down thy burden, O come unto me; I will not forsake thee, Though all else should flee."
