Dorreen Joy Simmons, 68, of 137 W. Midland Ave., Ironwood, died peacefully in her sleep Oct. 24, 2006, at home, with her family by her side, following a courageous battle with cancer.
She was born and raised in Ironwood and graduated from Luther L. Wright High School in 1957. She worked locally and spent a short time in Kenosha, Wis. before returning to Ironwood.
Dorreen was a member of Our Lady of Peace Catholic Church in Ironwood. She was an avid homemaker, a devoted wife and mother, and a friend to all who were in need. She enjoyed baking, collecting recipes, cookbooks, reading and flowers.
On May 21, 1960, she was married to James J. Simmons at St. Ambrose Catholic Church in Ironwood by the late Msgr. Joseph Seifert. James, her husband of 46 years, survives.
Also surviving are a son, James Jr. (Cindy), Ironwood; a daughter, Anita (Gary) Holewinski, Eagle River, Wis.; five grandchildren, Robert Holewinski, Ft. Irwin, Calif., Danielle Holewinski, Albuquerque, N.M., James Simmons, Marquette, and Alan and Christine Simmons, Ironwood; five brothers, John (Maureen) Rood, Lake Forest, Calif., Thomas (Kim) Kirkley, Milwaukee, Wis., Renny (Sandy) Anderson, Mt. Horeb, Wis., Robert (Jolene) Kirkley, Yuma, Ariz., and Lawrence Kirkley, Menomonee Falls, Wis.; two sisters, Sharon (Jim) Foley, Ironwood, and Terry Lynn (Ron) Nelson, Ft. Lauderdale, Fla.; and brothers- and sisters-in-law, Ray and Gloria Simmons, White Pine, Alicia and Ted Schmalz, Bessemer Township, Marguerite and Al Koski, Negaunee, Ron Simmons (Sherri Holmes), Ironwood, and Brian Simmons (Janet Peterson), Wakefield.
Dorreen was preceded in death by her parents and a brother, Eugene.
A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated Saturday, Oct. 28, at 11 a.m. at Our Lady of Peace Catholic Church in Ironwood, with the Rev. Darryl J. Pepin, presider.
Rite of Committal was held in the St. Joseph Family Room at the church, with luncheon to follow in the parish hall.
Interment wias in Riverside Cemetery, Ironwood.
Pallbearers were Gary and Robert Holewinski, James Simmons Jr., Ted Schmalz, Ray Simmons and Lawrence Kirkley.
