August Diemer was born Feb. 22, 1863 in Weisbach, Germany, a very small village east of Heidelberg and now part of a Nature Park. He was baptized Franz August Diemer. His parents were August Diemer and Anna Maria Frei or Frey. At the age of 18 he came to America. He traveled from Bremen on the ship Donau and arrived in New York, May 30, 1881. August first appeared in the Los Angeles Directory in 1888 when he was listed as a baker working for American Bakery. He married Anna Zenz in 1889 and in quick succession they had 3 children, Emma, August, Jr., and Anna. In the late 1890's, when he was about 35, August left his young family for a short time to go to the gold fields in the Klondike to work as a baker. The journey to this remote, wilderness area of Canada was probably more difficult than the search for gold. One can only wonder if he would have done other adventurous things if he had not lost part of his leg in a horse and buggy accident with a street car in Los Angeles. From census records it is clear August worked until his death in 1930. After the loss of his leg, the 1920 and 1930 census show he worked as an ice cream salesman.

Gold he brought back from the Klondike was made into brooches for his wife Anna, and daughters, Emma and Annie.
August died in 1930 of heart disease.
