William Robert Long was born April 3, 1874 in Nixon, Tennessee (Hardin County), son of George Washington Long (1851-1935) and Rebecca Ann Spearman (1854-1892). William's parents had a number of children prior to his mother's death in 1892. At that time his father married again to Sarah Clementine Shelton and fathered more children.

In about 1894, William married Mamie Grisham. She was born August 1878 in Tennessee.

The 1900 Federal Census for Civil District 5, Tennessee (Hardin County) shows William Long, a farmer, age 26, born April 1874 in Tennessee; and his wife, Mamie G., age 21, born August 1878 in Tennessee. Living with them was their son, James E. Long, age 8 months, born October 1899 in Tennessee.

The 1910 Federal Census for Civil District 5, Tennessee (Hardin County) shows William R. Long, a laborer, age 36, born in Tennessee; and his wife, Mamie Grisham Long, age 31, born in Tennessee; and their two sons, James Edgar Long, age 10; and Grisham Long, age 7; both born in Tennessee. They were living in the home of Mamie's mother, Mary M. Cobb, age 55, born in Tennessee; and Mamie's stepfather, Alfred W. Cobb, a farmer, age 63, born in Alabama. Also living in the household was Mamie's maternal aunt, Martha A. Bryan, a widow, age 65, born in Tennessee.

The World War I Draft Registration Cards show that William registered for the draft on September 12, 1918 in Durant, Oklahoma (Bryan County). He gave his age as 44; his birthdate as April 3, 1874; his occupation as a road supervisor; his current residence as Bokchito, Oklahoma (Bryan County); and his nearest relative as his wife, Mamie G. Long.

The 1920 Federal Census for Bokchito, Oklahoma (Bryan County) shows William R. Long, a retail grocery clerk, age 44, born in Tennessee; and his wife, Mamie Grisham Long, age 41, born in Tennessee. Living with them were their two sons, Edgar Long, a retail grocery clerk, age 20; and Grisham Long, age 17; both born in Tennessee. In addition, William's niece, Thelma L. Milton, age 9; and his nephew, Deward Milton, age 7; both born in Texas; were living with the family.

The 1930 Federal Census for Bokchito, Oklahoma (Bryan County) shows William R. Long, a farmer, age 56, born in Tennessee; and his wife, Mamie Grisham Long, age 51, born in Tennessee. Living with them was their son, Edgar Long, age 30, born in Tennessee; and their nephew, Deward Milton, age 17; born in Texas.

The 1940 Federal Census for Bokchito, Oklahoma (Bryan County) shows William R. Long, age 66, born in Tennessee; and his wife, Mamie Grisham Long, age 61, born in Tennessee. Living with them was their son, Edgar Long, a livestock trader, age 40, born in Tennessee.

William died May 5, 1953 in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma (Oklahoma County) and was buried in the Highland Cemetery in Durant, Oklahoma (Bryan County). Mamie died October 21, 1967 and was buried in Highland Cemetery beside her husband.
