Reverend Brown was a character in two of Laura Ingalls Wilder's books, "Little Town on the Prarie" and "These Happy Golden Years." His adopted daughter, Ida Wright, was one of Laura's best friends when they were teenagers and also appears in the books. Reverend Brown organized the First Congregational Church in DeSmet in June 1880, and also officiated at Laura and Almanzo's wedding in 1885. He claimed to be a cousin of John Brown, who raided Harper's Ferry.
