He was born in Cameron County, Texas to Robert and Ruby (Williams) Chambers. He was honorably discharged in 1946 at the rank of Private First Class.
He married Flavia M. Smolik in 1946. She preceded him in death.
He then married Carol Hirsch on May 17, 1962. She survives.
He is also survived by a son, Robert Chambers of Salem; daughter Katherine Owsley of Portland; brother Robert Chambers of Washougal, Washington; sisters Anna Jo Webb of Milton-Freewater and Alma Louise Hays of Yreka, California; 11 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.
His son, Christopher Chambers, also a marine, was killed in Vietnam in 1968.
He served in the U.S. Marine Corp during WWII and was awarded the Purple Heart for injuries sustained overseas.
