Alexander "Alex" Evans enlisted in the 124th U.S. Colored Infantry on October 25, 1864 at Camp Nelson. He died of tuberculosis as the Camp Nelson hospital.

Alex Evans proceeded directly from slavery to the war against slavery. According to his military records, he was owned by George Evans of Clark County, Kentucky at the time of his enlistment.
